The genealogical resources in the Mildred E. Ward Special Collections Room can help provide some of the pieces to the puzzle when tracing your family history, especially those from the North Georgia area. Our genealogy collection contains comprehensive genealogical and historical sources.  Although the primary focus is on Catoosa County and the surrounding areas and Georgia, we also have information on Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware.

The collection includes works by local authors, Genealogy-related periodicals, “family files,” maps, obituary cards and Revolutionary and Civil War military record and pension books.  We have a large Native American section, focusing on the Cherokee Nation.

Computers are also available for genealogical research in the Mildred E. Ward Special Collections Room.

Library staff are available in the Genealogy room to answer questions most weekdays from 3-4 p.m.

Genealogy Research Policy

The Catoosa County Library genealogist will provide limited research, look ups, answer your genealogy-related questions and provide suggestions to breakthrough those brick walls.  Requests are answered in the order in which they are received.  Our staff does not conduct general research and will consult indexed materials only. We cannot locate living friends or relatives for you.  Records of living persons are not easily accessible due to privacy laws.  Donations are accepted and appreciated.  To donate by check made payable to Catoosa County Friends of the Library.

All research request should be on the Genealogy Request Form.  There are four ways to issue a request:

  • Requests can be submitted in person.  Just ask for a Genealogy Request Form fill it out and drop it off at the front desk or hand it to Melisa Hammontree, our genealogist.

  • Email requests can be submitted to melisahammontree@catoosacountylibrary.org.  Either save a copy of the Genealogy Request Form, fill it out and attach it to your e-mail or put all of the information that the form asks for in your e-mail.

  • You can print and fill out a Genealogy Request Form and mail it in.  Requests can be submitted by mail to:  Melisa Hammontree, Care of Catoosa County Library, 108 Catoosa Circle, Ringgold, GA 30736

  • Requests can be made by phone.  This is not recommended but can be done as time and staffing allow.  Individuals inquiring by phone may be asked to submit the official request by mail or e-mail.
